HOW MUCH DOES A SHIPPING CONTAINER COST ?

The cost of purchasing a shipping container in the US can vary widely depending on a range of factors. Firstly, the condition of the container can impact the price. A new 20ft shipping container currently can cost between $1,500 to $2,500, depending on the supplier. Used containers can be cheaper, but the price will depend on the age and condition of the container. Typically, a second-hand 20ft container will cost anywhere from $999 to $1,300, making it a more affordable option for tight budgets.

Another factor that can affect the price of a shipping container is its destination location. If you’re buying a container from a supplier who is located far away from you, you may need to pay extra for delivery. Also, if you require the container to be modified in any way, for example adding windows or doors, this can also increase the cost.

It is worth considering whether you want to buy or hire a shipping container. Hiring can be a cost-effective option if you only need the container for a short period of time, as it can be cheaper than purchasing outright. However, if you need the container for a longer period, buying may be a better option as you will eventually recoup your investment.

WHAT DO THE LETTERS & NUMBERS MEAN ON MY CONTAINER ?

Container numbers are essentially serial numbers, each one is unique and tells shipping lines, rail lines and other industry participants who owns the container (or who originally owned it). The numbers are alpha-numeric (4 letters and 7 numbers). The 4 letters identify the original owner/manufacturer and the first 6 numbers are sequential, indicating the batch, size, type and sometimes even colour of the container. The 7th digit is called the “check digit” and it is not sequential – it is calculated using an algorithm and ensures the uniqueness of the serial number.

CAN YOU MODIFY SHIPPING CONTAINERS ?

Yes, we provide modification services to create bespoke units for a range of projects and businesses. From minor additions to major conversions, our workshop team can transform containers to suit an array of customer needs.

Minor modifications include adding windows for increased light and air flow, personnel doors and roller shutters for easier access, plywood lining and insulation to reduce condensation, electrics, lighting, and full or partial repaints to revamp the exterior look of the container.

Complete container conversions include bars, hotels, food serveries, workshops, offices, and confined space training units so we are well-versed in modification projects. We can help throughout the entire process, from the initial design to the build and final fit.

HOW DO I GET MY SHIPPING CONTAINER DELIVERED ?

For standard container deliveries, you will be told an estimated lead time when you place your order. If the container is being modified, this will extend the lead time for delivery.

With nationwide delivery available, the transportation and offloading of units is undertaken by one of our trusted haulier partners.

Depending on the size and quantity, units can be delivered a few different ways. An articulated lorry, known for its two parts; a tractor which pulls a trailer and is the ideal option for a large load. Containers can also be delivered via a lorry and drag trailer, or a rigid lorry, the latter being more suitable when access is restricted.

You must ensure that the land prepared for the containers to be offloaded, with solid foundations in place for siting. A firm, level ground is hugely important because if the ground is uneven there is a chance of the container doors being extremely difficult to open and close.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES?

Durability – Cargo containers have been built to withstand the elements of sea travel, such as strong winds, harsh rain, etc. This means that container homes are not going to leak, they’ll stand up to extreme weather conditions and, some even claim, are earthquake proof and hurricane proof.

ISN’T A CONTAINER HOME VERY HOT OR VERY COLD?

We insulate our container homes which very effectively controls the heat and cold inside the Container Home.  A Large chunk of the building cost is exclusively for insulation of the interior.

Another way to control the temperature is to put a roof over the entire structure.  This not only controls the interior temperature, but helps protect the containers from the weather.

HOW LONG DO CONTAINER HOMES LAST?

You should expect your containers to last for at least twenty-five years without any problems. If you maintain the containers and keep on top of any rust then you can expect your containers to last longer.

IS BUILDING WITH SHIPPING CONTAINERS CHEAP?

The general consensus is that shipping container homes are cheaper to build than conventional housing. Ted Crowe says that it really depends on the situation, but shipping containers reduce costs dramatically in areas where it’s difficult to erect regular housing, such as sloping blocks of land

HOW DO YOU INSULATE A SHIPPING CONTAINER HOME?

We use the maximum insulation available in our container homes.  We must comply with the conductivity calculations as set out by the SANS regulations.  We achieve an R value of 3.78 in the ceiling, and 2.90 in the walls.  Windows do make a huge difference in looks, but reduce the insulation factor dramatically.  Plan for double glazing if possible.

DO CONTAINER HOMES NEED PLANNING PERMISSION?
Container housing often does not need planning permission because it is not considered to be permanent. … However, the rules vary in different parts of the country, so you should contact your local planning authority (LPA) for a definitive answer regarding your site.

We assist our clients to ascertain what the local rules are, and we help in getting the necessary permissions and approvals.
